ABOUT THE ARTIST
Martin H. Ward began his carving journey in 1988 while working for Ontario Hydro. He found an advertisement for a carving course where his first subject was a duck (smoothie). Although the course was fun, it was moving too slowly for him and decided to make things a bit more interesting by purchasing a book on how to carve songbirds written by Rosalyn Leach Daisey. He was able to carve three songbirds by the time the class was finished. He then entered a competition with his three songbirds and won first, second and third place.
Along with the carving courses he began taking ornithology and natural history at the University of Guelph. In 1993 Martin officially retired and began spending most of his time carving. He entered many local competitions which brought a variety of commissioned works that kept him quite busy. In 1997 Martin began teaching carving classes at a local High school. He loved teaching so much that he turned his garage into a teaching studio in which the classes were easily filled. Many of his students have taken multiple classes and won many competitions of their own. Students say he is a very patient and understanding instructor. To this day he still teaches three days per week.
WHAT MATERIALS DOES MARTIN WARD USE?
Martin's carvings are 100% wood except for the legs (made out of metal for support) and eyes (made of glass). Tools used to make the carving consist of wood burners, rotary carver with diamond and ruby cutters and acrylic paint to bring them to life. Exceptional detail goes into the painting of each individual piece which gives them a life like presence.
